Travel during the 2025 election period
Parliamentarians
Travel during an election period is undertaken in accordance with the obligations and principles that apply to all travel under the Parliamentary Business Resources Framework (PBR).
The PBR obligations require that travel:
- is for the dominant purpose of parliamentary business
- represents value for money to the Commonwealth
- is publicly justifiable
- has been undertaken in good faith, and
- is booked and claimed in line with the conditions set by IPEA as the administrator.
More information is available on the Principles-based framework page.
Staff
Employees may undertake travel for official duties during an election period when they are directed by their employing parliamentarian. Travel is in accordance with the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2024-27 guidelines, which provides that:
- travel at Commonwealth expense must be economical, effective, efficient and ethical
- travel can be anywhere in Australia by the most efficient direct route available
- travel at Commonwealth expense cannot be used to obtain personal benefits and must be organised to meet official business requirements, not personal requirements.
