IPEA Communication

IPEA engages in a wide range of communication activities to support parliamentarians, former parliamentarians and their staff in their parliamentary business. 

We engage with the Australian community through our website and social media channels. We publish Parliamentarians' Expenditure Reports on our website in a filterable and downloadable format. A range of guidance material for parliamentarians and their staff is available on the Travel section of this website.

IPEA provides advice to parliamentarians and their staff on travel related matters in person, over the phone and by email. We facilitate regular information sessions to increase awareness of IPEA’s functions and related legislative requirements.

IPEA'S Functions

IPEA has the following functions:

  • Giving advice to parliamentarians and MOP(S) Act staff about travel expenses and travel allowances.
  • Monitoring the travel expenses and travel allowances of parliamentarian and MOP(S) Act staff.
  • Preparing regular reports relating to:
    • all work expenses, travel expenses and travel allowances claimed by parliamentarians
    • travel expenses and travel allowances claimed by MOP(S) Act staff.
  • Conducting audits relating to:
    • all work expenses, travel expenses and travel allowances claimed by parliamentarians
    • travel expenses and travel allowances claimed by MOP(S) Act staff.
  • Processing claims relating to travel expenses and travel allowances of parliamentarians and their staff.

Providing Information

When liaising with the media, IPEA must abide by certain legislative requirements including the Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority Act 2017, the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act) and the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 1982. IPEA staff are employed under the Public Service Act 1999, and must adhere to the APS Code of Conduct.

Privacy & FOI

IPEA complies with the Privacy Act 1988. To increase transparency, a standard set of work expenses are reported in the Parliamentary Work Expenses section of this website. IPEA releases information consistently with our FOI procedures.

Audit & Assurance 

IPEA does not comment publicly on individual matters (including whether a matter is being considered under the Dealing with Misuse of Parliamentary Work Expenses protocol) as it could potentially compromise the conduct and/or outcome of any investigation, and the privacy of individuals concerned.

Upon completion of an audit, the Members of the Authority may decide to publicly release an audit report. Published Audit Reports are available in the Assurance & Audit section of this website.
